Shortness of breathe, anxiety or asthma

A year ago, I had my first panic attack in train and after that few more and I have always had anxiety since then, but lately I don't have panic attacks or anxiety anymore but what I have now is shortness of breathe, I keep thinking about my breathing all the time and it's making my life miserable, I just can't stop thinking about breathing every minute.. I did lot of things myself to get rid of this, I have tried like thought stopping techniques, exercise, yoga etc, please if anybody out there is going through what I'm..help me!!!!!

Hey there imcrazy2, I like the name.... I often feel that way too, crazy I mean...lol, yeah well ok, anyways... First off let me apologize if I sound like I am babbling, I am having a bad day of what I call 'brain or fibro fog' as I have fibromyagia. Now to your question:  I go through the same thing at times. I can remember when I was a child I had to sit through my younger sisters christmas program thingy in the school gym. (we are talking like 18 years ago. Im 28 now...lol) I could not for the life of me seem to catch my breath. I remember thinking 'man this is sooo boring' because I kept yawning and yawning, but I just could not catch my breath. The harder I tried, the more freaked out I got and the faster my heart started to beat, then I began to sweat. Well at the age of what, like 10 I had no idea what was going on, and I never told anyone because it eventually just stopped. Well here it is many years later and I still go through this and like you it happens to me sometimes also while eating. Only it happens to me as I am eating, its like the food gets stuck or something and blocks my airpassage, which I know it doesnt, but thats what it feels like. Then I catch myself sitting upon the edge of the chair sitting straight as I can trying to take deep breaths to catch my breath. Some time it works sometimes it doesnt. I think its an anxiety attack or a mini panick attack. I have no idea what brings them on, but they sure do suck, and they seem to come at the most inappropriate times. Just recently, right before christmas, the doctors put me on xanax .5 mg 3 times a day. I dont feel like I need to take it that many times a day, it makes me so tired and forgetful. I mean I was so anxious around christmas this year I took my xanax as prescribed not knowing what it would do to me, and I have lost the memory of christmas eve and christmas day. I remember bits a pieces of it, and thats not a good feeling. So I only take it when I start to feel like I am going into an attack. I dont really see why people become addicted to xanax either, unless they like to sleep alot, or unless it has a different effect on them. Who knows. Meds work on people in different ways I suppose. Anyways I got off topic and caught myself babbling, just like I figured I would, damn 'fog moments'. But I have never been diagnosed with asthma, I have been tested, but they say I dont have it, so I am assumming that mine is anxiety, and panic attacks for some underlying reason. When I start to feel like that like I said I sit up on the edge of the chair, or couch or whatever it is I am sitting on and I will take deep breaths in through my nose and let it out through my mouth slowly. It may feel like you are suffocating or doing lamaze (sp?) breathing, but after a minute or two of doing this it starts to help. I also notice, for me it helps to count. Like breath in through your nose to the count of 5 or 6 and let it out slow through your mouth and count even slower like to 10 or 12. Sounds corney and stupid, thats what I thought when my therapist told me about it, but it actually works for the most part. If you have never tried it go for it, it couldnt hurt any, and if it doesnt work for you, atleast you know you have tried it that way if someone else suggests it to you you can tell them, nope doesnt work for me. If you do decide to try it and it works, or hell even if it doesnt, let me know what you think ok. I am always popping in here atleast once or twice a day, even though I dont post too often. You may want to see a psychologist for an evaluation of your anxiety issues.Also, see a different asthma specialist for a second opinion on whether or not you really have asthma. I saw a "specialist" once that had a script for Advair written on every patient before he even examined them. There are function tests they can do to determine if you actually have asthma.It could be that you have both asthma and anxiety...and anxiety can and will cause tightness and shortness of breath and can prolong asthma attacks and make them seem worse than they seem to be based on physical symptoms.

Anxiety Breathing Problems

I know that feeling I left my college classes due to my anxiety/ panic attacks luckily I passed though. I am afraid of going back to school soon because of my attacks. Ask your doctor first about your asthma and if any anxiety medication is right for you. You can ask to see a counselor for behavioral therapy it can help. Also I take natural pills for anxiety instead of the ones doctors prescribe me because the ones the doctor prescribes  makes my sick. As for the natural medication it helps me right away with no bad effects. It all depends on you everyone is different.

IS THIS ANXIETY??

I forgot to ad that i occassionally have one good day out of the whole week. On the good day i feel like heyy im getting better, thank god. But then i wake up the next day, With all my symptoms back. How come i keep having like one good day in the week, or 2 good days, and then all my symptoms come back. Is it normal for such physical symptoms to come and go even when i feel wonderful. Plus isn't there a chance that the doctors are missing something, a new disease that i developed? I feel like i want to keep going to every doctor until someone finds out whats wrong with me. Is it normal to feel this way?

I struggle with anxiety, and shortness of breath is one of the common ways that it manifests itself. Try some relaxation techniques, like yoga, meditation, whatever. doctor suspect i was about to get asthma while i was a baby, maybe its asthma now?

It could possibly be asthma but it honestly sounds more like anxiety. I dealt with that when I was a teen and it is scary. If you can, I would suggest talking to your dr.

Can someone get asthma at 39?

Definitely!! I know several people who developed asthma in their 40's and 50's.  I was first diagnosed with asthma at 34, but it suddenly worsened severely at 42.  You can develop both asthma and allergies at any age.   You should definitely see a doctor and have this evaluated to make sure other things are not going on and start effective treatment.  Be patient though.  Come back if you have other questions.

stress test

Is this the one they do with you on the treadmill? If so, they can give you something for your anxiety. I had the treadmill stress test and I was able to take a xanax. If it's the other one that's a medicine induced stress test where you lay on a table, then I'm not sure. Is your Dr. wanting you to get this test done? Has the chest pain went away since you started using your inhaler? You know anxiety can give alot of us shortness of breath and chest pains.
