Suggested Questions And Answer :

How to increase GABA levels in the brain?

First, antidepressants don't increase GABA in the brain.  The don't work on GABA, they work on other neurotransmitters, and they don't even increase those, they just alter how the body uses them, so Abilify and ssris, for example don't target GABA.  Benzos do target GABA, but don't necessarily increase it, again, they alter the way the body uses it mostly.  GABA supplements don't generally cross the blood/brain barrier, so they don't usually increase GABA either.  Neurontin is a drug that does increase GABA since it is GABA that bypasses the digestive system and goes straight to the brain.  To try and increase GABA's effects, you can take natural relaxants, which work similar to benzos but by being much weaker in action and by being digested normally as food don't have the same potential for the side effects or addictive properties of benzos.  Examples are passionflower, kava, valerian, hops, and a host of others.  To try to increase GABA, you take the nutrients that the body uses to make GABA.  Mostly, this would be a pseudo-amino acid called taurine and B6, assuming you don't have enough B6 in your body already.  But the body will only use this to make more GABA if it thinks it's necessary, otherwise most of it will be flushed out unused or applied to other uses.

High calcium, high calcitriol, high blood pressure

HI  there justsumgurl. I don't blame you to be concerned, but please do not feel defeated. Let's see if your situation can be improved so you can start feeling your age again. Being so young, it is unfair to be suffering like that you deserve to have a better chance in life. OK, for starters, If your blood calcium level is  HIGH, it should be associated with a LOW parathyroid hormone level and if your doctors are saying low is normal because of some lab derived statistical formula, it isn't necessarily so! "Most" people within those so called ranges do not have significant issues, however some people will exhibit significant symptoms at sub-clinical levels around the lower or higher ranges. What are your PTH and Serum Ca values? Please state lab reference values/range. This should be an elementary case to dx and If indeed it is determined positive, treatment is by surgery only! Ideally you should find a Parathyroid specialist/surgeon who is experienced in surgical removal of the malignant parathyroid gland (you have four) only, using the latest techniques in what is called a mini-parathyroid surgery, which has a very high success rate. The other issue, you may have going on, which stands out because of your symptoms, is possible under-regulated hypothyroidism. I have never been convinced of the value of synthroid over natural (NDT) and the same goes for the standard serum thyroid tests, which only test...serum levels, offering no assurance that they correlate with thyroid function. So, if you do not get your Free T3, Free T4 and Reverse T3 levels checked you may be in perpetual limbo, believing your thyroid regulation is fine, based on possibly inaccurate test results. One easy way to self-test is by doing Dr. Barnes Basal Temperature test -just do a search for it and follow the simple instructions to the T-but do the test after day 4 of your period and not when you suspect you have an underlying infection. Can you elaborate on the normal vitamin D levels and high calcitriol levels? Why did your doctor test for calcitriol? Please give details A couple things I would recommend you pay attention to is to aim for a high consumption of leafy greens and fresh salads (vitamin K rich foods), which help with Ca transport to the teeth, bones and joints, instead of soft tissues and also to have adequate magnesium and zinc . Oral magnesium is inefficient, so you may want to consider transdermal magnesium oil treatments. Look it up online or if you prefer, I can send you some info on that. I do this a couple times a week for maintenance. Re: elevated liver enzymes, which one?  Alanine transaminase (ALT) or Aspartate transaminase (AST). Please include levels and lab range. I can go on here for a long time regarding things of lesser importance, but I won't, since I believe less is more and if the aforementioned are not ruled out or ruled in, then no progress can be made. Please let me know if you need any further details, however, my comments and suggestions are not intended to replace medical advice. Best wishes. Niko

Very confused..MS or not?

Hi Gina376. Three oligoclonal bands only in cfs fluid and not in serum , is not necessarily consistent just with MS , as the jury is still out on this one. Some studies show that a higher number is (is 3 higher and indicative of MS and 2 is not?) and some other studies disprove it!!! Confusing to say the least! And since there are no other details included in regards to your CSF, I'm with your Neurologist on this one. The problem is that in at least 10% of patients with 2 or more OBs do not have MS, therefore the test is not conclusive! It's just like in law and justice. You cannot be 90% guilty and get convicted. Have you had at least 2 relapses, separated by a minimum of one month? This is one of the fundamental rules for MS dx. The other rule is at least 2 brain or spinal cord lesions. MS diagnosis is complex and there are various types and categories. Categories: Negative Possible Probable. Your diagnosis should be here according to the info in your post. Definite Types: Relapsing-Remitting     Primary-Progressive Secondary-Progressive Progressive-Relapsing Hope this helps, but please note that this is not a substitute for medical advice. Best wishes. Strange causes of adrenal problems

Hi Lyala I've had a candida infection since I was 13 years old and I still get flare ups now and I am 36!  I also get cystitis and hypoglycaemia.   I went to the doctors all through my 20's and they diagnosed me with low oestrogen and cysts on my ovaries.   I still didn't feel well after being treated for that (hypoglycaemia & lethargy) and battled with doctors ever since.  I have now been diagnosed with under-active thyroid and ulcerative collitis.   I think there must be more going on with you than just your adrenals - have you have your thyroid checked out and maybe Vit D levels?   My body went haywire like yours is doing and at one point I couldn't even walk - I couldn't take stress either and the slightest bit made me feel very ill. Best wishes Jo

Have I been developing the wrong way for too long?!

Hi, How are you? Are there other symptoms present? Were you able to see your doctor and have your hormone tests done? During puberty, endocrine glands produce hormones that cause body changes and the development of secondary sex characteristics.  In girls, the ovaries produce estrogen and other female hormones while in boys, the testicles increase production of testosterone. Results of the tests will be correlated with your symptoms. take care and hope to hear from you soon.
