Psychological effects of childhood sexuality?

Hi, I'm so sorry you're going through this. Have you ever considered speaking with a therapist or counselor who specializes in treating people for past sexual abuse? I understand that you feel guilt because of your past, but you must understand that it was not your fault; you were a innocent child.  Later, as a teenager, you may have been acting out from past abuse, plus dealing with increasing hormone changes and sexual drive... I's not uncommon for survivors of sexual abuse, especially if their abuser was of the same sex, to feel 'sexual orientation confusion'.  Often survivors of abuse, don't realize that their current problems in life might very well stem from past abuse issues.  If you've ever felt depressed, anxiety, or hopelessness, all of these could be directly linked to your past abuse. So, I suggest seeking advice and treatment from a professional, such as an Abuse Counselor, or Sexual Abuse Therapist. Seeking professional help can allow you to talk about your past (and present), and help you work through guilt and any lingering pain. It's a way to get support, and learn coping skills that will improve your life... Unfortunately, we can't change the past, but we can change our present and future :)  You deserve to feel happy and healthy in life, that's why I suggest following through with getting professional help...I'm sending you some information via private message; please check your inbox soon. Take Care

uncontrollable horrific mental images, chronic twitching, head banging

Yes I had similar things happen to me as a child though not nearly as bad but it did scar me mentally. But you are describing two things. The first sounds like ptsd and the second could be a neurological disability such as epilepsy if it involves random involuntarily motion. It would be best for him to go to a support group if he doesn't want to take medication. Because then if the other people in the support group for what he is coping with explain to him how medication helped them coming from them it might seem different and make sense to him. Take it slowly with the recovery issue as admitting to help is traumatic in itself as part of it involves reliving the past mentally but it seems as if a consult with a neurologist would be warranted as well.

Does Buspar really work for anxiety? Does it help with OCD?

Hi Airowe,Sorry to hear about your struggles with anxiety. Buspar is a psychoactive drugs used for general anxiety, and like most of these medications, they can take 2-3 weeks to notice a change in behaviour. Obsessive-compulsive thoughts and habits are frustrating and distressing, I know, and medications rarely fix the problem. As you've seen for yourself they may mask the problem or keep things under better control, but then you're forced to deal with the many side effects that come with it. It is no surprise that you want to be drug-free. My experiences have taught me the same. The good news is is that you know the root cause of your anxiety and obsessive tendencies. Many don't, or find it too painful to face. But this puts you in a very good position because you can look at alternative methods of healing. Hypnotherapy is a very powerful and effective method for post-traumatic stress and to diminish fears and phobias.Hypnotherapy is nothing to fear-- I had some training in this and the therapists are very empathetic and calming. They must be in order to be in that line of work. And it is common for clients to only need one session to overcome fears, addictions and stress. From what you've told me this seems like an excellent option for you and I strongly suggest you look into it.All the best,Brittany

Seroquel XR side effects / tests on Beagles

Seroquel XR in lasting all day could have an increased likelihood of sexual side effects and it could be interacting with the the Amitiza. It would depend what you mean by "sexual side effects". Decreased libido could definitely be from the Seroquel. Anti-cholinergic effects from both medications interacting (those cause dry mouth and blurred vision but affect all areas of the body) could cause other problems that would make sex difficult and/or painful. I do know Abilify (and there is one similar anti-psychotic due for release like it) is less likely to cause either of these effects and the Phase II experimental antipsychotic I am on glycine, a glutamate antagonist in FDA study has none but I do have sexual side effects from the multiple medications I take for tardive dyskinesia which the new antipsychotics can't cause but I have in severe form from the previous ones.   Animal studies are done to test physical effects of medications (some people are opposed to them its complex imo, I do think some tests were abusive, of course though you would want to give a study medication to an animal before a person first because if it has dangerous side effects a person could be affected). They can't study psychosis in animals because animals don't have thoughts like humans. But medications affect them the same. And if you notice a previous post, someone did actually develop cataracts from Seroquel so it was good they noted that. Medications go through Phase I trials where they are studied on people who are completely healthy just to see the reaction and if they are safe and then Phase II (where the glycine is) to study effectiveness and finally Phase III to find exact specific dosages and then a new drug approval letter is sent. Regardless animal tests are done first as although people's brains work differently from animals their bodies function in much the same manner.

Celexa sexual side effects

Remember, as with any prescribed medication, the manufacturer has to put every single possilbe side effect even if it does not affect the vast majority of people that take the medicaiton.  There can be side effects with SSRIs like Celexa and Prozac.  When I was on Zoloft, my sex drive definitely went down, however, this is not the case with everyone.  Just because you experienced side effects with Prozac does not mean they will be the same with Celexa.  Just remember, that there is typically an 'adjustment period' whenever you start, stop, or adjust dosages with these medications, so being patient is someitmes warranted in my opinion....although that is much easier said than done...keep us posted!

It's totally individual.  You're going through withdrawal, extremely common with Effexor.  If that's all you're suffering, you're doing well, and should be fine.  Try taking fish oil supplements, they've been known to help with the brain zaps.  Nordic Naturals makes a good one.

Anti Anxiety without sexual side effects??

Many people experience the side effect you're experiencing on lexapro or other SSRI's. For something like this you're going to have to look at the pros and cons of the medication you're on and along with your doctor decide what's best for you. Your Dr might be able to prescribe you something else in the same drug family that might suit you better.
