Abused by a doctor and medical staff in Finland

I wonder if anyone knows of any groups for people abused by medical professionals. I am from Finland originally, but have also lived in the US and the UK for longer periods of time. I have now lived in Finland for the past year and before that I lived in Chicago. I was abused by a doctor at the Oulu University Hospital in Northern Finland when given too much fentanyl after falling off a horse and fracturing four ribs in January this year. I was nearly unconscious and a female doctor (ca 50 years old) asked me disgusting sexual questions in front of 9 people and provoked me to talk about sexual

Abused by a doctor and medical staff in Finland

Asking about sexual history is a part of a history taking by physicians and I highly doubt that they meant to be rude or abuse you especially with so many people around.

Hi Missy and welcome to the forum. We have all been where you are and fear is the worst part of this. Don't be afraid. If you scroll down to the bottom right of this page you will find the Thomas Recipe under "Most Viewed Health Pages'. Just prepare yourself to having flu like symptoms for a few days.  Everyone is different but withdrawals usually last about 4-5 days, peaking on day 3 or 4. Definitely get some Imodium and drink lots of fluids to avoid dehydration. I drank tons of gatorade, ensures or boosts, ate crackers, bananas and light foods.  You need to eat as much as you can to help with your energy. Take a good B Complex Vitamin as well. Take lots of hot baths with epsom salts as they say it really helps. Just try and relax and watch comedies or movies for a few days and you will make it.  You can do this. Keep posting for support.  It helps. Hugs Pat

Medical Ethics?

Short answer: Yes. Long answer... Are you absolutely sure that the past drug abuse isn't listed in his med records? I think that a doctor would prescribe a prescription that a patient had ODed on if the doctor felt that there wasn't a risk of the patient ODing on the drug again OR there was a greater risk of the patient suffering more serious side effects (risk of suicide or death, i guess in this case) without the drug. A doctor is always supposed to weigh the risk of possible side-effect and misuse of the drug against the risks associated with not prescribing the drug. I have unfortunately taken too much pain medication when out of my mind in pain before, and been completely up front about this with my family doctor AND very hesitate about taking the same medication again and my family doctor has noted it in my chart, and we have worked out strategies to make sure that I am safe when I am in extreme amounts of pain so that I don't accidentally ever overdose or make a suicide attempt when I have "lost it" in pain (I suffer from severe chronic migraines and the pain level often gets bad enough that I become irrational during the very worst moments). Now... the only odd part of your story is the family connection. I personally don't think that family should be the primary care givers of other family members when ever possible (I understand that for money issues, sometimes this is necessary... but I think if it can be avoided, then at least, from my personal experience, I believe that there are ethical issues that can arise when it is a family member you are having to make medical decisions for...). I do think that family members should support and help and care for other family members though... and help other family members when they can. And, if your brother's partner is a pain doctor and your brother needs medical attention, then it would make sense that your brother's partner would be providing quite a lot of extra home care for your brother. BUT, I am not exactly sure that they should be the prescribing doctor... but, I don't know if they are actually breaking any laws or rules, they probably aren't... and I am sure that lots of people would disagree with me on thinking that there is something wrong with this and maybe I am wrong about thinking that there is something wrong with a family member being the main prescribing doctor... I don't know... Anyway. I think the most you can do is tell your brother that you are worried about his safety because you care about him and love him... but you understand and trust him too. And, if he ever feels unsafe again (if he ODed on purpose) to please talk to you about it because you will always be there to listen and not judge. And, I think that since they likely aren't breaking any laws (someone, please correct me if I am wrong) then that is really the most you can do since this really is a case of doctor/patient confidentiality and you also don't want to push your brother away. (unless of course this is a situation where you have power of attorney or something like that...)

Anxiety meds

Do you have a general practitioner that you have been seeing for a while?  I know that if you just go to a doctor for only one visit, who does not know your history, they will not prescribe controlled substances.  A pyschiatrist would probably prescribe it quicker, but, never on a first visit...it is a shame, but they have to do that because there are people who "doctor hop" to feed their bad habits...if you don't mind my asking, why won't your other doctor prescribe it?

My Medications

First off is this a General/Family Dr or a Psych?  A GP usually isn't trained to know about all the drugs used to treat BP.  You need to see a Pdoc for a true eval and proper care and meds. But if this is a Pdoc and you haven't even seen the Dr how does s/he even know what you are taking?  As for the receptionist I don't think s/he would be qualified to say what meds you should take.  I would go in for the appointment anyway and talk with the new Dr.  Ask s/he why they think the combo isn't right.  Only thing I can help you with.  You can always look for another Dr.
