Topical Corticosteroid Acne

Roughly two months ago I used a very potent topical corticosteroid, Clobetasol Proprionate, for around three weeks. Shortly after this I began breaking out excessively (I was on accutane earlier this year, so I was used to being clear). Ever since then I have not stopped breaking out on my face. The steroid was applied to my lower stomach area, and behind my arms. I have since researched the ointment, and it states that acne is a side effect. My question is, does this go away on its own once the topical has been stopped? Do I need to use another treatment to get rid of my acne again? This i

Topical Corticosteroid Acne

How frustrating to have clear skin, then use a drug that has a side effect of causing acne!  I'm not familiar with the topical steriod that you used.  Although topical, the steroids will most likely take around three weeks to clear from your system.  I would encourage you to drink plenty of water, which will help your body flush out toxins and the medicine.  I am also a former user of accutane (but many years ago).  Though not as potent, I continue to use vitamin A capsules on a daily basis to assist with clear skin.  Good luck!

Acne Scars and large pores treatment

Clinique make a product called Post-blemish formula which fades the dark spots left behind after acne and discourages new ones from forming. They also make a pore-minimiser. Estee Lauder's Idealist skin refinisher is also good for making large pores smaller. Their foaming cleanser for normal skin gives a real soap-and-water clean and their exfoliator for normal skin will help turn your skin over more quickly. There are two inexpensive scar formulas which also reduce pigmentation; Bio-oil and Palmer's Cocoa Butter formula. The dark spots left behind by acne are usually superficial and fade within a year. If they do not they are then considered permanent scarring and laser treatment or microdermabrasion is indicated to remove them. I cannot see from your profile if you are female. If you are and you wear make-up i would recommend Estee Lauder's Maximum coverage foundation or Elizabeth Arden's Flawless finish full coverage foundation. These will conceal all imperfections and give you more confidence. Loiloi xx

Acne Scars left by a topical steroid(Triamcinolone acetonide)

Topical steroids are useful in the treatment of inflammed skin, for example when an allergic reaction has occured. However, they should not be used for acne or rosacea. Although they reduce inflammation, topical steroids can actually make acne worse. They should also only be used on the face if advised by a doctor because they cause thinning of the skin. Steroids are usually only used for a short period of time. It is not clear from your post how long ago this occured. Most acne scarring is superficial and heals within one year. A topical retinoid called Retin-a (tretinoin) will clear both active acne and post-acne scarring. But make sure you consult your doctor to see if this is suitable for you, never use medications prescribed for someone else. Acne usually responds well to a course of oral antibiotics such as Lymecycline or Oxytetracycline. These can be used in addition to topical gels. If a fair trial of the above medications result in failure or relapse, your GP may refer you to a dermatologist for stronger treatment. Eloise.

Levaquin for acne?

Hi. Levaquin is prescribed for skin infections due to Staphylococcus aureus. It is not  prescribed for longer than 28 days. Although tetracycline antibiotics can cause oral or vaginal thrush, erythromycin is less likely to. This can be taken 500mg twice daily for acne. Acne is caused when hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands. As you have had a hysterectomy, discuss with your doctor whether synthetic hormones would benefit you. `Differin (adapalene 0.1%) is considered one of the best topical treatments. It is even more effective when used in conjunction with oral antibiotics. Eloise.

Adult Acne and Diet?

Hi, I'm glad that your acne is improving. Officially, no causal link has been established between diet and acne. They once did a study where one group of people ate only chocolate and their acne was no different from that of the control group who ate normally. That said i do avoid cow's milk as it has hormones in, and as you know hormones are one of the causes of acne. I know we've spoken before, but please remind me: Why are you reluctant to take an anti-androgen birth control pill? and have you ever taken Accutane? Thanks, Eloise x

still acne at 39

Hi. Oxytetracycline can be safely taken for extended periods for conditions such as acne vulgaris and rosacea. However, you are taking a very high dose (the usual dose for acne would be 250mg twice daily). Differin is the mildest of the topical retinoids, have you tried Retin-A (contains tretinoin) ? Can I ask why you took 2 and a half courses of Accutane? Was there a reason you couldn't complete the third course? You don't say if you are male or female but female adult acne patients usually respond well to an anti-androgen such as Spironolactone and/or a combined oral contraceptive pill such as Diane35. Eloise.

Age appropriate acne treatments

If you have tried all the prescription topical treatments such as Differin, Dalacin-T and Duac, and found them ineffective the next step would be to try oral antibiotics such as Erythromycin or Oxytetracycline. Another option would be taking an anti-androgen contaceptive pill such as Diane35 or Yasmin. Laser treatment can be costly but ones such as N-Lite have few side effects and can treat acne and scarring. Eloise
