Anyone chose NOT to receive chemo??

Hello.  I was officially diagnosed with BC October 2008 (Stage III) and am HER2neu+ and ER/PR+.  I have decided against traditional chemo, and instead am receiving Herceptin every three weeks as well as taking Arimidex daily.  Sometime later this year I will have double mastectomy.  Would like to hear from others who are not doing chemo.   Betty

Suggested Questions And Answer :

Anyone chose NOT to receive chemo??

I'm curious as to what type of surgery you did have ... a lumpectomy perhaps ?? You didn't mention what type of breast cancer or if there was any lymph node involvement. These would be very important points in choosing not to do Chrmotherapy. Also I don't "get" the bilat. mastectomy to be done later this year .... why then and not now ???   Thanks....

PATHOLOGY REPORT AFTER CHEMO AND MASECTOMY

Yes it does seem to read that way .... BUT, the wording means that there is no evidence of the cells that were seen previously (on biopsy) and none of any cells remaining following chemotherapy. If you do think that the diagnosis may have been in error then you might request that the slides from the biopsy be examined by an independent Pathology Lab. I admit that I would be curious if I were you. Whether you persue the issue is entirely up to you of course.  By the way .... whichever, Congratulations on the good report !!

Allergic Reaction to Taxotere

Steroids are often given along with a medication that is causing side effects such as a rash, to allow you to continue the planned treatment. However, if the reaction is very severe, or is even worse with your next round of this chemo, your oncologist made need to switch you to a different drug. My understanding is that some people can take Taxol (which is a very similar drug) without cross-sensitivity (that is, without the same type of allergic reaction). Since you are concerned about the reaction you experienced, it would be a good idea to discuss your questions with your oncologist prior to you next scheduled treatment. Best wishes...

ependymoma

I was diagnosed with an ependymoma in June 2008.  It was located inside my spinal cord at T-8 thru T-11.  On July 12, 2008 they wnet in a removed as much of the tumor as they could without doing permanent damage.  Mine was found to be low grade cancer and I went thru 5 weeks of radiation treatments. One week after the surgery to remove the tumor (while still in the hospital) my colon busted and I had to have emergency surgery to repair that.   One year later I am doing fine I guess for what I went thru.  I rely on  walker to get around.  My balance is off and I do not know where my feet are.  The biggest problem I have now if numbenss, tightness and tingling in my legs.  I went to the doctor today and she put me on muscle relaxers to relieve this.  Sure hope it helps. My doctor never gave me a survival rate.  He will montor my tumor to make sure it does not return.  I agree in trying read about ependymoma everthing mostly refers to the brain.

Nerve Damage from Chemotherapy

When I went thru chemo one of the drugs was "Taxotere" which is a taxane drug...meaning its almost exactly the same as Taxol.  And yes the Taxol can cause neuropathy/nerve damage.   I did 6 months of the taxotere and I had problems with my wrists, finger tips, feet and toes.  It was awful...especially my feet.   But in my case and so many other woman that have had this problem you will find in time it will usually get better and many times completely go away.  :)  I think it was about 8 months after I finished chemo before my neuropathy was completely gone.  So hang in there...it really should get better in time.  I know only a handful of woman that still have a few issues with it but in most cases in time everything will be much improved. As to the drug you were prescribed for relief...I can't help you with that one.  I've never heard of it...however I wish my doctors would of given me something at that time.  I hope it works for you.  Best wishes. Hyperthyroidism after radiation treatment for breast cancer

Hi there. Radiation to the breast may cause some exposure to the thyroid gland as well.  This may result in transient inflammation called thyroiditis which will manifest with hyperthyroid symptoms (sweating, hyperdefecation, palpitation, insomnia, etc), and then there might follow a relatively hypothyroid state, with reversal of the symptoms I mentioned.  I suggest that these people you know undergo constant and regular surveillance of their thyroid function since there might follow a period of hypothyroidism after the hypothyroid episode.  Adjunct therapies such as accupuncture are welcome as long as they help the patient, and do not cause harm.   I hope all your friends will do well.  Regards and God bless.
