Are there any negative side effects of galactograms?  I have had a leaking of a clear substance, and occasionally small amount of blood from both nipples (more from the left) for a few months. Also, nipples are quite often itchy and sore,(like a rash on the nipples) and easily irritated by showering, contact with towels, etc.  Family doctor ordered mammogram, it showed some calcified clusters, they want me to report to hospital clinic for a better picture, and also to do a galactogram. Can all this radiation cause cancer? What is the fluid composed of that they will inject i

suspicous area in mammogram and ultrasound with bloody discharge

Hi there. Blood like breast discharges are most commonly caused by a benign lesion called a breast duct papilloma.  This lesion may be detected by standard breast tests such as the mammogram.  A ductogram would further be able to locate the lesion, and hence, plan more effectively for the treatment. Treatment for papillomas is usually surgery, and this has resulted in cure for most patients. If the radiologist suspects something else such as a possible malignancy or cancer, then it is best to consult with a breast specialist or surgeon, to possibly have the suspicious area sampled or biopsied. Regards.

any other tests available?

Hi there. I believe that the battery of non-invasive tests are already done.  If these tests cannot ascertain the nature of the findings, then we may have no choice but to go into invasive testing such as the ultrasound guided biopsy that was planned by your doctor.  The biopsy is a definitive test to see the nature of the solid lesion inside the duct.  A core biopsy entails the use of a larger bore needle (compared to the ones they use for vaccine shots).  The advantage of this is that it can get a larger tissue sample for a more adequate and accurate assessment of the lesion.  I hope your biopsy will turn out OK, and that you experience as minimal pain as possible.  Regards and God bless.

Should I push for a biopsy?

Hi, Since all the tests you had were normal, then this is most likely a benign breast condition. From what you describe it sounds like Mammary Duct Ectasia Symptoms, which may be caused by infection or inflammation of a milk ducts in the breast, near the nipple, causing green, brown or black discharge and pain. Take care to avoid nipple stimulation( including frequent checks for discharge) because it can actually make the discharge persist. Since the pain is constant,I would advise you to see a Breast Specialist to review all your tests results.He/she might treat this problem with antibiotics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications or even surgery to remove the abnormal duct. I hope you'll feel better soon, once treatment starts. All the best...
