DON'T DO NECK AND BACK FUSIONS

IN MY OPINION I WOULDN'T DO A CERVICAL OR LUMBAR FUSION. I HAD A MULTI LEVEL FUSION IN MY CERVICAL AND LUMBAR SPINE AND NOW I CAN BARELY WALK. THEY WILL CAUSE BONE SPURS,SEGMENTING, AND ARTHRITIS. IT MAY WORK AT FIRST BUT THE FUSION WILL PRESS UP AND RUIN THE LEVELS ABOVE AND BELOW THEN YOU ALWAYS NEED ANOTHER ONE. I'M SAYING THIS BECAUSE I CARE ABOUT PEOPLE AND I DON'T WANT ANYONE TO END UP LIKE ME.

neck fusion and severe migrains

Hi there! The stinging around the ears or the migraine is unlikely to be related to the neck fusion, though the neck discomfort may be associated. I would suggest consulting your neurologist for an evaluation and appropriate management of your symptoms. Hope this is useful. Take care!

Total Neck Fusion?

I would at the very least get a second opinion from another specialist.  Did they put any metal any where (pins, bars, etc.).  Is your dr able to explain to you exactly what is causing the problems or is he just guessing from physical symptoms?  I'm not very knowledgeable in this area but my biggest suggestion is make sure you really understand everything  so you can make your own informed decisions and always ask about complications.  Find out what the complications are if you do and if you don't go through with it.  Find out the names of conditions and procedures and get copies of all lab, films, etc. and never let a dr pressure you into doing something, If you feel he might be then take somebody to appts with you.

Back and Neck pain and arm pain

I am sorry to hear of your continued pain.  I am not a physician, but from my understanding (I have had a cervical fusion C4-6), it is not likely that it is the hardware in your neck that is producing the pain. The titanium plate and screws used are not as heavy as the hardware used in the lumbar area. It is possible that the hardware has slipped in position causing some recurrent pressure on the exiting nerve roots. It is probably more likely that you have sustained further degeneration to the disc(s) above your fusion, particularly C3-4. The fusion has taken stress off the lower discs but has displaced it to the higher area and could cause further deterioration and even possible herniation of the disc at the higher level.  It does not usually occur so soon after a fusion (15 months), but it is a risk that does exist post fusion. The only way to determine the cause of recurrent pain would be to do x-rays to determine correct positioning of the hardware and the status of the other discs.  You might need to have a followup MRI as well.  I am assuming you are still under the care of your prior surgeon --- what are his/her recommendations? Hope you get the help you need --
