Pain in my back on tailbone, buttocks and numbness in left leg

For three week now I have had problems with my lower back onthe middle of my tailbone. There is some pain that goes across my left buttocks from my spine to the middle of my buttocks that hurts. There is also numbness down the left side of my left leg about 5 inches wide from my hip to my knee that comes and goes but happens most when I am sitting or lay on my left side when sleeping. What is the problem with me?

Suggested Questions And Answer :

Pain in my back on tailbone, buttocks and numbness in left leg

I would suggest to request an MRI of your lumbar and sacral area. I have had a rupture at L5-S1 and bulge at L4-5 and these symptoms you describe are fiitting to an S!/ sciatic nerve compression...

Back pain with numbness

Well,  I had a similar MRI and I am not a doctor but from my research and asking others the same questions: The L4-L5 is a herniated disc that is pushing out the right side.  This is narrowing your spinal cord and could be causing alot of your symptoms.  Like the numbness and pain in the buttocks. The L5-S1 is the same thing only to the left with nerve root compression that would explain the numbness and pain in your left leg.   Have you seen an Orthopedic doctor?  I would suggest you really look into physical therapy and decompression therapy.  Ask for a TENSE unit they are wonderful.  Try everything before surgery.  I have had a discectomy on my L5-S1 and have had the same pain/symptoms ever since the surgery.  Still have herniated disc per MRI.  So I basically went through the surgery for no reason in my mind.  I also had a C6/C7 discectomy fusion with hardware and cadaver bone.  That was a nightmare and still is. Hope this helps. :)

Is a discectomy the right choice?

surgery will ONLY relieve leg/foot problems. there is a saying "once a bad back, always a bad back".......i can tell you my experience. 2 years ago, i ruptured L5-S1. did NOT have surgery!  the leg pain finally eased up and ive started having less back pain as each day/month passes. however, if i overdo it, or do something that i shouldnt....both the leg and back pain is horrendous...but after a few days...sometimes up to a week....i begin to feel better again. however....i have never had pelvic pain or as far as the hips..it was more towards the back area.   the same goes for my husband.....he ruptured his first disc back in 1988...had surgery....twice. ruptured another disc in 2004....did NOT have surgery.....he found that the end result was the same.....no leg pain....but flare ups when he overdoes things..... one drawback to surgery...#1...most likely will end up with scar tissue...and ive heard that that can get so bad that surgery would be needed to cut out the scar tissue. #2...you increase your chance of getting arthritis in your back. no one can tell you whether or not to have the surgery done...thats a personal choice. however...i feel that letting you know that surgery cannot alleviate the back pain may help you better understand the surgery. it is intended to relieve the leg pain..not the back pain.

surely sounds like nerve damage to me.

HELP! PLEASE

Follow up with the doctor if you haven't already done so. I am not a doctor but have had 4 epidural spinal injections. Each time the doctor stressed that it might help, or it might not. But in either case, it would be a good diagnostic indication of what is wrong and what the followup should be. Best wishes!!

Tailbone Pain

I did remember something different that I did Wednesday that I would like to know if this could of caused the pain. I bought some Dr. Scholl's heel and arch support to help my feet because I was coming home with my feet killing me. I noticed Wednesday when I used them my feet didn't hurt me. Don't know if this could be the reason my tailbone could be hurting........who knows?

Sciatia Pain ? Anyone Ever had burning sensations in the feet ? ):

I have numbness down the back of my calf and the bottom of my foot and around my ankle.  I get some relief from taking Lyrica.  It is expensive, but for me it works pretty well.  I still have numbness, but much less than without the medication.  I wanted to see whether Neurontin would give me any more relief, so I took a break from the Lyrica to try it.  That is when I realized how much relief the Lyrica actually provides for me. I know what you mean, though, about the pain getting to you.  It is hard to concentrate on anything other than the pain when the pain is that intense.  By the way, I also get epidural injections, so that may be working to relieve the numbness, too.  But even with the surgery, Lyrica, epidurals, anti-inflammatorries lots of ice, a tens unit and narcotic pain medication, I'm still miserable.  Granted, I had complications after my surgery and required another.  But, I guess I am just living with the pain and talking to a psychologist about the depression from the pain and my inability to do a lot.  Also, I look at a lot of these boards and I feel bad saying this, but it's sort of a nice feeling that I'm not the only one suffering with back pain.  Of course, I would prefer that no one on the boards, including me, had to have pain.  Anyway, for the time being, I'm just dealing with it as best as I can.  I know that I definitely don't want to take any more medication -- I especially don't want any more narcotics.  And, I'd like to be medication-free as soon as possible. I know it
