Hyrum's decompretion surgery...

HI Congratulations on a surgery date ....we do have a list tips for the hospital stay...-http://www.medhelp.org/health_pages/list?cid=186  It is in the health pages..... As far as how long it takes it can be newhere from 3  to 8 hrs....it depends on what they find once inside....mine was almost 7.5 hrs and we expected it to be more like 4..... We are all different  and so are the Drs....they should give u an estimate but do not be surprised if it takes longer. Look at the tips thread and see if u still have questions.... a large Vneck night shirt or a button down...nothing to pull over that will be tight going over the head...a fav stuffed animal or pillow will help once he is moved to a reg room. see the list...and know we will have a prayer thread for him. wishing u both all the best.

going to have the Chiari Decompression Surgery...need info

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum. Well u said it we are all different and it is very diff to say what u should expect, except do not listen to the general guidelines as to how u should feel and when post op, since we r all diff we can not go by a generic time line, instead listen to ur body... Many Of us have posted our surgical journey in a journal on our bio page...just click on the name of the member and u should be able to see the journal if not u may need to send a friend request as some (I do) have my privacy settings on friends only......

Questions re surgery and need for multiple surgeries

Hi...there r several reasons for multipule surgeries...one the original surgeon was not a chiari specialist....and  might not have had the experience needed to do it correctly.....it could also be that another condition exsisted and has caused additional issues.....and chiari can not be sured u will always have it....a fall or ne trauma can cause it to re herniate. Surgery is used to help stop the progression of symptoms....it is not a cure and some symptoms or all can remain.... Quality of life is a factor when a decseion is made to do surgery along with CSF blockage and overcrowding. I had my tonsils cortorized during my PFD......I do believe it depends on the individual NS and patient as to if this is done.....just as if a patch is needed and what type is used all depends on the NS. My tonsils were not near as long as ur son's.....one side was 4mm and the other was 6mm, but I also had over crowding due to my spinal cord is smaller than normal....my odontoid is curved wrong causing the area to be tighter/smaller. U really need to talk to a Chiari specialist to know what is best for ur son.....every one of us that has had this surgery already has had a different experience and results. But, we can / will share the experiences so u can better deciede what to do. "selma"

Are there ANY positives out there?

There are plenty of positives, look at the list of members, and see all that do not actively participate, mainly that is bcuz they are doing great! Once they have surgery they go back to their lives they stop posting, those that have issues, keep posting...I try to keep  everyone to come back to show it is possible to feel good post op... But what u also have to understand is, besides the fact we are all different, it depends on how long u had symptoms b4 u had surgery as to if u may have perm nerve damage...AND depending on what is going on with u u may get worse with out surgery....it is not should I have it , it is do I need it now...or can I wait.....and if I do what are the consequences. Next, getting the right Dr, too many go with Drs that promise to cure them, and then find them selves worse off then b4...that can be lack of experience ...Lastly, many for unknown reasons develop post op conditions such as ICP, epilepsy, and seizures....there is no way to know b4.... But, to not have surgery can also cause these issues, and also make recovery less possible the longer u wait...talk to a true chiari specialist, once u have the decision is easier, it is still scary, but u have us to help u  : )   "selma"

Nearly 3 months post op and I need another surgery - on my foot this time!

Well the fact u heal well is the first consideration....and it is great that u have that on ur side...I had a boot and was told to wear it when I was on my feet which was most of the time...I wound up with  atrophy in the leg muscles.....I had to go to PT to try to build them back up which I was able to get most of it back....this was all b4 my chiari dx.   I had a lot of feet issues, ankle and leg problems....but I did find mine was related to EDS...and I heal slow...so I do know how good that is for u : )   When is ur foot surgery scheduled for?...I will post a prayer thread for u : )
