Multi level fusion

I have had a 2 level fusion and have herniated the disc above earlier this year. The fusion puts more stress on your non affected discs. I have had three surgeries in less than 3 yrs. the last two were failures at controlling my pain. You have a 50/50 chance of having a good outcome. My problem was disc herniations, djd and nerve damage to my leg not scoliosis. I'm not able to work anymore and there is nothing that can be done for my pain. I was in my very early 30's when I had this done. I would highly recommend a second opinion and really really know that this is what you truly want to do. It could change your life for good or for very bad. Good luck to you! Ginger

spinal fusion and bursitis

If I'm not mistaken bursitis is fluid build up. I'm sure it's possible to have that post op. I did not have it with my ALIF but my surgeries were unsuccessful. I have herniated L-3 to S-1. Hopefully further down the road things will clear up for you and your bursitis will subside. Best wishes!

Spinal Stimulation, anyone had this done?

Hi, Kathy.  I decided against having the stimulation system implanted, but it was suggested by my doctor.  He gave me a DVD and pmphlet on the procedure.  The device that he suggested is made by medtronic (www.medtronic.com).  They come in non-rechargeable and rechargeable.  Apparently you have an initial test period where the leads are outside of your body and you see how well the device will work for you.  If you are satisfied, they implant the leads I believe in your epidural space.  The main unit itself is implanted under your skin.  You have an external (wireless) remote control.  As I understand it, instead of feeling pain, you would feel a tingling sensation.  I use a tens unit and prefer to avoid surgery.  Good luck.

Cervical fusion for chronic vertigo?

In any of your MRI'S was there ever any mention of low lying tonsils or a Chiari Malformation? Was there any mention of tonsil herniation? Chiari is when the lowest part of the brain is pushed down by the spinal cord. There is a forum on this site for Chiari and many people there experience vertigo and dizziness all the time. Look under the C category on the forums. Someone on that board may be able to help you with some answers. Chadry

need lumbar fusion

Hi there! Yes, fusion if the lumbar spine would lead to decreased movement around the region such as during bending etc. However this would not cause a major morbidity or highly affect you day to day life. The choice of a surgery is based on the benefits of symptomatic improvement exceeding the risk factors and the complications. Hope this is helpful. Take care!

Stiffness from fusion and hardware

I'm so sorry for your pain!! What grande was your spondylolisthesis? I have one too at l5/s1 which is a grade 2-3. I had a one level fusion with instrumentation 7 months ago. Certain activities will prompt my fusion site stiffness that had not been there prior to surgery. I energy tap, use essential oils, and take hot baths to help eliviate my stiffness. I take ibphrophen if all that doesn't help and then I just grin and bear it.  Hopefully by a year when my fusion has taken place fully, it will no longer hurt. Maybe the same will ring true for you. But you had a 3 level fusion. Take care
